How bundles work

Updated October 29, 2026 · 2 min read

A bundle is the product a shopper is looking at plus up to four products that go with it. Smart Cross Sell shows it on that product’s page, with one button that adds all of them to the cart.

Everything is bought together

A bundle is all or nothing: there are no checkboxes to leave a product out. Its benefit — a discount, a gift or free shipping — applies only when the shopper adds the bundle with its button and keeps every product of it in the cart. Remove one product and the cart goes back to normal prices; add it back and the benefit returns. Adding the same products one by one, outside the bundle, doesn’t give the benefit.

Which bundle a product shows: four levels

A product page shows at most one bundle. Smart Cross Sell checks four levels in order; the first one that has a bundle for the product wins and the rest are skipped:

  1. Product bundle — a bundle set on the product itself, under Products → Edit → Smart Cross Sell. It always wins. See Creating a bundle for one product.
  2. Mass bundle rules — bundles you build once and show on many products: by category, tag, a list of products or the whole store. See Mass bundles.
  3. Global fallback — when nothing above matches, Smart Cross Sell can pick products automatically: from the same category, the same tag, or at random. It is off by default (“Do nothing”) and never gives a benefit. Set it under Global Settings → Global Fallback (Level 3), including how many products to show (1–4).
  4. Nothing — no bundle; the product page stays exactly as your theme built it.

When several mass bundles match

If two mass bundles match the same product, the one with the higher Priority (0–99) wins. With equal priority, the more specific one wins: a bundle for selected products beats one for a tag, which beats one for a category, which beats one for all products. On a full tie the older bundle wins.

Test a product

The Bundle resolution card on the Bundles tab shows the four levels and how many bundles each has. Use Test a product there to see which level — and which bundle — a product gets right now.

Bundles that don’t show

Only Active bundles show; Draft bundles are kept but hidden. A bundle also doesn’t show when the product itself can’t be ordered, or — by default — when one of its products can’t be ordered (see Variable products and products that can’t be ordered). If no product page shows bundles at all, see When bundles don’t show on the product page.
