Variable products in a bundle
When the product page or a bundle product is a variable product, the bundle shows its options (size, colour…) as small buttons. Only combinations that can be ordered are offered, and the first one that can is selected. Choosing an option that doesn’t go with the current selection switches the other options to a combination that exists, and the price follows the chosen variation.
To always bundle one exact variation, such as “T-shirt – M”, add that variation instead of the whole product.
What “can be ordered” means
A product can be ordered when it is published, has a price, and is in stock or allows backorders. A variable product can be ordered when at least one of its variations can.
Smart Cross Sell only lets you add products that can be ordered. When one of them can’t be ordered later, it follows Global Settings → Products that can’t be ordered:
- Hide the bundle (default) — the bundle doesn’t show until all its products can be ordered again. If the global fallback is on, its automatic suggestions show instead.
- Show the rest, no benefit — the bundle shows without that product, and without its discount, gift or free shipping.
A gift that is out of stock also stops the benefit, so the bundle never promises a gift it can’t add.
Where you see it
- The bundles list marks the bundle: “1 product can’t be ordered · bundle hidden” (or “shown without its benefit”).
- The bundle editor tags the product NOT AVAILABLE or OUT OF STOCK.
- The product’s Smart Cross Sell tab names the products that can’t be ordered right now.
Deleted products
When a product goes to the trash, bundles that use it are set to Draft, so nothing half-empty shows. Restore the product and switch the bundle back to Active. When a product is deleted permanently, it is removed from every bundle, and its own product bundle is deleted.
